Is Your Pool Leaking?

A drop in your pool's water level can be caused by evaporation, but if you're losing more than a quarter inch per day, there might be a leak. A leaky pool can ruin your summer fun and cost you lots of money. Be on the lookout for:

  •  Wet Spots: Check for soggy areas around your pool that never seem to dry out.
  • Cracks or Damage: Keep an eye out for visible cracks or damage in your pool's structure.
  • Unbalanced Chemical Levels: Leaks can affect your pool's chemical balance, making maintenance a hassle.
  • Algae Growth: Algae growth from adding untreated water to a leaky swimming pool
  • Puddles: Standing water near the pool pump or pipes
  • Signs of Corrosion: Corroded pipes or pump

If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to take action!

What Should You Do for Your Pool Leak?

When you suspect you have a leak, having it repaired right away is important. But how can you tell for sure if your swimming pool is really losing water? You can try a few things on your own to check for this, such as:

  • Use a pool leak testing solution from your local pool supply store. Turn off your pool’s filter and/or jet for at least 15 minutes, then slowly add the leak solution with a syringe near the return, if the dye gets pulled into the return you likely have a leak.
  • Look for visual leaks around your pool and equipment. Look for consistent puddling around your equipment or groundif you have an above-ground pool.
  • Fill a bucket with water and leave it next to the pool. Measure the water level in the bucket and the pool to see if the pool's water level drops more than the buckets over a few days.

What if you still can’t tell? Even with these simple methods, it can be hard to determine if you really do have a leak. That’s where professional pool leak detection comes into play.
